In an opinion piece in The New York Times on Thursday, Hughes, who co-founded Facebook along with his Harvard roommate Mark Zuckerberg some 15 years ago, called Zuckerberg’s power “unprecedented and un-American.” “Mark is a good, kind person,” Hughes says, “but his focus on growth “led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks”. He also commented on Zuckerberg’s power within the company as the majority of the Facebook shares owned by him meant that there’s no internal check on his power....

For the second time this year, Zuckerberg’s Pinterest account has been hacked by OurMine again. OurMine is reportedly a group of teenage hackers based in Saudi Arabia who target social media accounts of top Silicon Valley executives in order to ‘raise awareness’ about internet security. It brings out the security flaws in a user’s account by gaining access to them, says OurMine team. Apparently, OurMine mailed folks at CNET who claimed to have hacked Zuckerberg’s Pinterest account....

Today, Facebook announced a new feature that will allow you to hide posts from ex automatically (or hide your posts from them) when you change your relationship status back to single. All traces of your past relationship can also be hidden from the public by using this feature. The FBI’s face recognition tool can access a whopping 412 million images including foreigners according to a new US government report. This figure is much much more that the conservative estimate of 30 million that FBI has been peddling to US public till now....

The team had investigated into how the self-encryption feature was implemented in several popular Western Digital My Passport and My Book models. Depending on the type of microchip used for the encryption operation, they found design flaws and backdoor-like features that enable brute-force password guessing attacks or even decryption of the data without knowing the password. The researchers found that in some of the Western Digital products, encryption is performed by the chip that bridges the USB and SATA interfaces while in other products, the encryption is done by the HDD’s own SATA controller, the USB bridge handled only the password validation....

France’s Internet watchdog, CNIL has given Facebook a three month notice to stop collecting the non-user data, as it has now come to light that the company has been collecting the data of the users who are not a part of the social network when they visit a Facebook web page. An order (PDF) issued by CNIL says that Facebook has no legal right to collect user data under current French laws and therefore it is to desist from collecting such data....

A new recent study from Google shows that Netflix has more demand than its pirate alternatives including torrents, streaming, and apps in piracy center Brazil. Google has now published an extension for its Chrome browser that fixes this serious WebRTC security hole in Google Chrome. The WebRTC flaw was exploited by placing a few lines of code on a website and using a STUN server it became possible to reveal not only users’ true IP addresses, but also their local network address too. At that time, VPN users could install the WebRTC block extension or ScriptSafe which should block the vulnerability....

Today Google Map Maker has gone live again although in selected countries. The company says the feature will be reopening in phases. Google Maps is a desktop web mapping service developed by Google.
